Summary

After battling the impossible, Zelie and Amari have finally succeeded in bringing magic back to the land of Orisha。 But the ritual was more powerful than they imagined, reigniting the powers of not only the maji but also some nobles with magic ancestry。

Now, Zelie struggles to unite the maji in an Orisha where the enemy is just as strong and magical as they are。 When Amari's mother forms an army of royals with newly awakened powers, Zelie fights to secure Amari's right to the throne and protect the new maji from the monarchy's wrath。

But with civil war looming on the horizon, Zelie finds herself at a breaking point: she must find a way to bring the kingdom together or watch as Orisha tears itself apart。

3。5Not as much of a page-turner as the first book, but still pretty good。

What happened with this? The plot and the characters were everywhere。 Everything just didn’t feel right。 I got annoyed with characters and if I’m being honest don’t like ANY of them。 Amari is better but still。。。 I want to know what happens but if it hadn’t left on a cliff hanger I probably would not have wanted to read the next one

While it's certainly not as good as the first book, and I disliked the flip flopping of ideals that Amari and Zelie did, it's still a great read。 There's a ton of action, very emotional pages, and it definitely grabs you。 I can't wait for the series to continue! I just read Children of Blood and Bone a couple of weeks before reading this and I think that had a large effect on my experience。 I wonder if the people who rating this lower would feel the same if they had re-read CoBaB right before。I would’ve rated this a 4/5 but since I finished it in one sitting a gave it a boost。

3。5✨ well。。。。that ending just shocked me。。。。we getting a 3rd book?

Three stars is actually generous for the amount of anger this book brought to me。 I loved Children of Blood and Bone SO MUCH! But in this book, Adeyemi takes away everything the characters learned in the first book and it’s like they’re starting their arcs over again。 SO FRUSTRATING!!! And she leaves it with a cliffhanger!!! I’m honestly not sure if I’ll read the 3rd book。 I kind of wish I had just stopped with the first one。。。 it was SO GOOD!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Definitely not as good as the first book - I felt like the plot wandered a little too much and the characters kept flip-flopping on their stance and values every chapter。 My main question is: why are Zélie and Amari not together??? I was really hoping for some queer representation (it felt like Amari + Binta was implied in the first book) but there was such a good opportunity lost with this one!

This series is amazing! I love the action and plot twists。 Just when you think you have everything figured out, something else pops up to keep you on the edge of your seat! Great characters。 Please tell me there is another one!

I kinda DNF'd this book, but I kind of didn't。 Let me explain: Halfway through reading about the absolutely pointless back and forth war, I decided to skip ahead to the end, because the plot was just stalling。 After reading that completely out of nowhere ending on the last page, I backed it up a bit to figure out what in the hell went wrong !So, I read the first book in the series, and there were things that bothered me a little。 1) why the inciting incident between the Maji and the nobles was n I kinda DNF'd this book, but I kind of didn't。 Let me explain: Halfway through reading about the absolutely pointless back and forth war, I decided to skip ahead to the end, because the plot was just stalling。 After reading that completely out of nowhere ending on the last page, I backed it up a bit to figure out what in the hell went wrong !So, I read the first book in the series, and there were things that bothered me a little。 1) why the inciting incident between the Maji and the nobles was never explained, although this is supposed to be the basis of why the two groups hate each other 2) no explanation of powers used by the Maji。 3) the characters continuously flip-flopping on their viewsI thought surely, most of these things would be fixed/explained in the second installment。 I thought maybe we knew what we were supposed to know, and a greater explanation would come later。 Sadly I was wrong。 NONE of the things that ticked me off from the first book were fixed or made better。 If anything, they got even worse。 After Zelie brings magic back in the first book, the Maji have their powers back, but so do the nobles who have made it their goals to wipe the Maji out。 At this point, I didn't even understand the point of the war。 Both sides have magic。 The main reason the nobles and the Maji hated each other in the first place was because the Maji supposedly declared war on them and butchered a bunch of them with their sacred magic。(something that was constantly alluded to, but NEVER fully explained)。 Now that both sides had magic, I didn't really understand what the point was with all the back and forth fighting。 The nobles STILL wanted to wipe the Maji out because of their magic, when the nobles had magic now too。 It made no sense。 There also never really seemed to be an end goal to the fighting。 None of the characters in the story were responsible or clear headed enough to take the throne, so what were they really fighting for? Secondly, with the introduction of even more characters having magic, you would think an explanation to how it all works would be included。。。NOPE! Random people, random powers popping up randomly。 Nobody knows how to control them either。 It was all over the place。 Lastly, we see again in this story how quickly the characters change their mind。 None of them had any rooted values or beliefs, so it made it hard to pick a person/side to root for。 One chapter Zelie is ready to kill herself, end it all to be with her mother and father。 The next shows her ready to incite a pointless war。 Amara was one of my fav characters because I felt like she thought with her head, and not with her temper, but even she flip flops in this book。 Don't even get me started on Inan。 He's supposed to be King, but he can't make up his damn mind either。 I just got sick of not understanding any of the character motivations。Overall, I did not enjoy this book。 it took me a week to even "finish" it and that was because the entire plot was pointless。 Characters had no development, pointless war, and then the ending! I think the author threw it in to incite enthusiasm for the third book, but it backfired。 I don't like to be emotionally manipulated, and that's what that ending was for me。 Not to mention the quasi-queer moments that were never developed, and the pointless romances either。 All in all, not a good follow up to the first book, which I enjoyed despite it's shortcomings。 。。。more

I really really loved the Children of Blood and Bone there is no denying that。 However this book left me feeling like each chapter was just a rewrite of the one before。 The characters really seemed to start falling apart for me。 I was so vested in them in the first book, but this was just them trying to hide from themselves and everyone around them over and over again。 It felt like the plot was just not moving forward, sure there were some realizations and magical discoveries, but even with tha I really really loved the Children of Blood and Bone there is no denying that。 However this book left me feeling like each chapter was just a rewrite of the one before。 The characters really seemed to start falling apart for me。 I was so vested in them in the first book, but this was just them trying to hide from themselves and everyone around them over and over again。 It felt like the plot was just not moving forward, sure there were some realizations and magical discoveries, but even with that being said, the plot was repetitive。 How many times can the maji be tricked by the monarchy? It seemed that the book got stuck in the attack and retreat theme with nothing else happening threw out。 The book overall was a good, quick read。 I am still stuck on the cliff hanger at the end and am looking forward to reading the next one。 Let us hope it does not take as long to come out and is more in the style of the first book。 Despite all this however, I stll really enjoy Tomi Adeyemi's style of writing and will continue to buy her books。 I love being able to get lost in a good book and she does deliver that! 。。。more

Loved this book! The characters finally connected with me more so than they did in the first book。 I’m so excited for the next book。 Hopefully it’s out soon! I need to know what happens because that ending was so unexpected。

A aurora perdeu completamente o foco, nada acontece até a pág 300 e nas últimas 100 páginas foi jogado um plot muito corrido e mal desenvolvido。 Estou bem decepcionada com a história。

Read this book aloud to your children or classroom and you will spark all kinds of impossible conversations。 You will come to hate the characters you love and love the characters you hate only to reverse back halfway through and then question your whole concept of love and hate by the end。 This book presses the boundaries of whatever genre this is supposed to be until the whole archetypal category of "genre" itself looses meaning。 This is probably the best sequel I've ever read。 The only problem Read this book aloud to your children or classroom and you will spark all kinds of impossible conversations。 You will come to hate the characters you love and love the characters you hate only to reverse back halfway through and then question your whole concept of love and hate by the end。 This book presses the boundaries of whatever genre this is supposed to be until the whole archetypal category of "genre" itself looses meaning。 This is probably the best sequel I've ever read。 The only problem is that I read it before the 3rd book even existed and now I have to wait for it to be written and translated into Spanish (which, by the way, the Spanish translation is excellent, though this book had a few more errors than the first)。 。。。more

So I liked it, but ugh every character was annoying。 Nobody agreed on anything and everyone believed they were the only one that could save the kingdom and make peace。 Zélie just wanted to leave and be free, which is understandable, but instead she stays and mopes around。 Amari is determined to become queen。 She was probably the least annoying, but she made some really dumb choices。 Zélie and Amari were almost always upset with each other and had horrible lack of communication。 It felt like so m So I liked it, but ugh every character was annoying。 Nobody agreed on anything and everyone believed they were the only one that could save the kingdom and make peace。 Zélie just wanted to leave and be free, which is understandable, but instead she stays and mopes around。 Amari is determined to become queen。 She was probably the least annoying, but she made some really dumb choices。 Zélie and Amari were almost always upset with each other and had horrible lack of communication。 It felt like so much of the book was just disagreements and than big flashy battles。 The writing and world building were great, the political intrigue was。。。 well intriguing and it made you think。 The disagreements were annoying, but everyone brought up good points。 If only they could actually communicate。 。。。more

There were parts I liked and disliked。 I found myself very annoyed that the story sometimes felt all over the place。 I love cliffhangers and suspense just as much as the next person, but geez。。。there were so many that it because annoying。 I mean if everyone is super powerful and going power crazy, why are we going into a 3rd book? We're powerful because we have this。 We're powerful because we can do this。 Well, we're more powerful because we can do that too and this。 We'll, we're even more power There were parts I liked and disliked。 I found myself very annoyed that the story sometimes felt all over the place。 I love cliffhangers and suspense just as much as the next person, but geez。。。there were so many that it because annoying。 I mean if everyone is super powerful and going power crazy, why are we going into a 3rd book? Yes, lol, because I do like the series。 。。。more

I was genuinely hoping that I could get closure in this book。 Which I didn’t。 The ending was just a cliffhanger that gave me more questions。 I also hoped that I wouldn’t cry to much。 Which I did! Especially near the ending。 Overall it was a great book but the first one was better

I don’t know what it is about this story but I am just am not invested in the characters。 I also feel like the characters just fall in and out of love very quickly just to then betray each other, get caught and be regretful。 I hate Inan’s entire storyline and found Amari and Zelie annoying throughout。 While I appreciate the creativity and originality of the magic system, it just can’t get me over the characters。

I really want to give this a 2。5。 There was so much potential in this book and it was sacrificed for the sake of a trilogy 🙄 It could've ended with this book but this story took a series of strange turns that I can't fathom。 I didn't enjoy it。 And I sped read the last 150 pages 😩 I really want to give this a 2。5。 There was so much potential in this book and it was sacrificed for the sake of a trilogy 🙄 It could've ended with this book but this story took a series of strange turns that I can't fathom。 I didn't enjoy it。 And I sped read the last 150 pages 😩 。。。more
